Our client is a high yielding palm oil plantation firm. 


About the role

The position reports to the Audit Committee with 8 subordinates. You will look after the overall group Internal Audit functions that covered Malaysia and Indonesia. You will:

  • Improve the effectiveness of the organization’s Internal controls, risk management and business processes through provision of independent reviews, analysis, appraisals and recommendations.

  • Control assurance based Audits for Plantation Operations, Mills, Central Workshop, Finance, HR, Civil, Sustainability and IT  in Upstream & Factory operations, Marketing, Commodity trading, Logistics, Finance, HR for Downstream with an objective to (a) strengthen the internal controls, processes and governance aspects within the group, (b) provide assurance to the stakeholders, (c) provide insights on Internal controls, risks and governance aspects to business process owners, (d) conduct necessary diagnosis, analysis and report findings on specific issues / areas as per management requirements.


Your responsibilities

  • Development of Regional Audit Plan & Strategy 

    • Determine an effective control assurance strategy to ensure that critical business risks are addressed and enable facilitation of smooth achievement of business plans of plantation units & corporate functions.

    • Planning & scheduling a regional audit structure & time plan – as per audit cycles agreed and signed off with CEO.

  • Internal Control Systems & Policies

    • Assess effectiveness of the existing policies and procedures and propose suggestions for improvement.

    • Review, carry out walk through tests and ensure the effectiveness and timely implementation of systems, processes procedures and policies, towards achieving business plans by.

    • Provide inputs for effective systems designing, eliminating duplications, adequately addresses prevailing systems weaknesses, eliminating /minimizing room for frauds, adopting techniques for charting /evaluating processes.

      • Evaluate and ensure all critical activities are addressed, capturing key operational risks.

      • Whilst systems should not impede operational efficiencies /flexibility.

    • Ensuring effective implementation of systems & processes –review the effectiveness of systems and processes in achieving productivity.

      • Implementation & compliance to policies, standard operating procedures.

      • Review and report on adequacy and effectiveness of SOP's and improvements if any.

      • Identify bottlenecks in implementation, lack of awareness / training / other operational impediments.

    • Review and recommend means of strengthening operational processes & systems, to overcome practical bottlenecks, deficiencies & loopholes.

      • Coordinate with relevant functions/ support services and facilitate and ensure processes and systems are reviewed/revised and updated on a continuous basis. 

    • Evaluating systems to ensure emerging industry challenges, new technologies, operating / best practices (benchmarking) – (among the industry best managed companies, and within our group companies) - are adequately captured in developing/ reviewing systems & processes. 

    • Review the efficiency of utilization of assets and resources, and ensuring proper systems exist for productivity monitoring / review. These are to be reviewed based on approved Business, plans, Budgets, feasibility project reports, and approved procurement documents, legal contracts including guarantees. 

      • Independent review of efficient utilization of assets, maintaining in good order. Reviewing usage/condition, need to replace assets /replacement cycle, reviewing maintenance costs against benefits derived. 

      • Reviewing if assets are deployed effectively (in most efficient activities), carrying out cost benefit of alternate uses for same assets, reviewing idling/ obsolete assets, reviewing if anticipated cost benefits are derived from assets/machinery, reviewing the evaluations carried out prior to purchasing assets, it’s meaningfulness etc. 

      • Reviewing control mechanisms for asset transfer, physical controls / recording of assets, reviewing and ensuring adequate insurance cover, potential risks on usage/asset value are adequately covered. 

      • Review to ensure new /cost efficient alternate assets/equipments are adequately evaluated by commercial / operating functions, assessing of new technologies /mechanisms of assets /equipment to derive operating efficiencies.

  • Information Security & Integrity 

    • Carrying out reviews to ensure integrity of information generated, across different systems, and review of systems integrity of ERP/MIS packages, validity of source documents (integrity). 

    • Review and ensure integrity of various management reports, MIS used by different levels of management, ensuring congruence and alignment of information to ensure same information source is used etc.

    • Ensure that duplication of data /MIS are minimized (avoiding different users adopting different sources of information).

    • Validating the accuracy, and integrity of financial statements and information. 

    • Assessing the level and compliance to controls in accounting /recording, adherence to accounting policies etc. 

    • Coordinate and facilitate / assist the IT function to carry out IT compliance reviews, /information security checls etc. 

    • Accuracy and completeness of IT master data changes and adequacy of controls over IT System changes and data transfers. 

  • Compliance & Control effectiveness 

    • Document compliance review programs for each process, to ensure robust control environment exists to manage process risks, minimize potential loss and opportunities for fraud.

    • Timely and quality reporting on audit findings.

    • Group Internal Audit / External Audit recommendations / audit comments for further improvements on internal controls & non-complinaces – follow-up & ensure processes are in place & continuous monitoring of implemetation of corrective action plans for strengthening of Internal controls. 

    • Guide & coordinate with operational teams for timely implementation of planned corrective audit action plans.

    • Overall Coaching & guiding of the management on Internal control.

  • Report to Audit Committee on findings on Audit cycles performed as per Annual agenda & independent assessment of control assurance.

  • Perform additional duties commensurate with the current role, as and when requested by management.


You will have

  • Degree in Business related field with a very strong commercial background. 

  • Direct experience in audit of palm oil plantation industry.

  • Possesses ability to convert data into insight & recommendations.

  • Very strong attention to detail & communication skills.

  • Excellent leadership and organization skills.
